Holotropic Breathwork: Should I do a Group or Private session?

Holotropic Breathwork is a powerful way of deeply opening to innate healing wisdom in our mind, body, and spirit. Drawing on ancient healing and spiritual practices, Holotropic Breathwork uses the breath and music to enter into a non-ordinary state of consciousness in a safe setting. It permits deep self-exploration, healing, and spiritual opening of the Self.

This style of Breathwork was developed with a group process in mind. In the 1980’s,  consciousness-expanding retreats and workshops were becoming popular. However, many people have also experienced Holotropic Breathwork in a private session. One difference between a group experience and a private session is a personal preference and the ability to let go or surrender into the process. Additionally, facilitating Holotropic Breathwork privately is similar to the facilitation of 1:1 psychedelic sessions and offers the same focus on integration as well as the emphasis on a safe setting.

What is the difference between a private and a group session?

Your breathwork experience may be exactly the same in either a group or private session because of the material in your psyche that is prepared to emerge. If a person is not comfortable in a group because they are highly sensitive or because they prefer a more private or personal environment, then the private session is the way to go.

Mari prepping for a Private Breathwork Session

It’s possible that if you already experienced a group session you may want to have a private session to spend more time talking about your personal process. With a private session, there is more time to integrate and share 1:1 about your particular healing or process of transformation.

Other differences between the group and the private Holotropic session is the length of time. The music set is longer in a group session and the group integration process includes mandala drawing and a group sharing circle. The group process can provide more energy that stimulates the psyche! Keep in mind that it is a personal preference and both options are available. If you have any specific questions, you may Contact Us
