Holotropic Breathwork & the Psychedelic Renaissance

There is much to say about what is transforming, and also challenging, in the world of non-ordinary states of consciousness relating to Holotropic Breathwork. From my perspective, and my conversations with colleagues, it is clear that the Psychedelic Renaissance is in full swing. Oregon and Colorado are on the verge of opening legal clinics to administer psilocybin (magic mushrooms) in a therapeutic setting. Australia just recently became the first nation to approve the legal use of psychedelic drugs. Deep and fast Breathwork has become a trend to induce an all-natural holotropic state of consciousness.

This is very exciting news for the improvement of our nation’s mental health crisis. It is also a bit scary because the guidelines for facilitating altered states of consciousness sessions are still blurry. The required credentials to become a certified or licensed facilitator in these aforementioned healing clinics has not been determined. This presents a challenge because a legalized facilitator, having an academic or medical background, may NOT EVER have experienced psychedelics or a non-ordinary state of consciousness firsthand. Regardless, will these clinics have a clear policy and protocol that provides a safe and sacred setting for these deeply vulnerable inner experiences?

My point is, in my recent conversations with colleagues certified in both Holotropic Breathwork™ and Grof® Breathwork, it was unanimous that Stan Grof’s work presents the most ideal foundation for training to hold safe space for those undergoing the inner exploration of the psyche. A handful of these colleagues have been involved in research studies since they began. Grof’s early research in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy determined the context of material that exists in the human psyche, and the numerous healing benefits available. If you want more information, go to Grof Legacy Training website.

I recognize this information may be a lot to unpack for folks that are not already aware of what is coming with the legalization of psychedelic drugs. As a facilitator of holotropic states of consciousness since 2005, I understand not everyone needs psychedelics to enter an altered state of consciousness. However, there are evidently many that do! In either case, you will soon have an option. More importantly, it is recommended that you explore the inner landscape of your psyche in a safe setting with a well-trained facilitator to provide the best possible transformative and healing outcome.

Lastly, people are much more aware of the benefits of Breathwork and that it is an all-natural, organic process. Many are now willing to go inward and reflect on what is meaningful and valuable to their life purpose or resolve mental health symptoms like anxiety, depression or trauma. To learn more about Holotropic Breathwork benefits or the history of this all-natural and profoundly organic healing modality, click here.
